Fabrication of Semi-finished Products Supplied by Timco
Semifinished material supplied by Timco can be cut, turned, planed, milled, drilled, stamped and welded easily on woodworking or metalworking machines. The following general directions should be observed in these machining operations:
To obtain surfaces of high quality, tools should always be sharp; for most purposes normal tool steel is satisfactory though many fabricators use special steels.
The best cutting speed is between 250 and 1000 m/min. At lower cutting speeds cooling is not required, but at the higher cutting speed range, water cooling or the use of a cutting soluble oil as coolant is essential. In all cases care must be taken to avoid heat buildup in the machining operation, so that the workpiece does not smear the cutting edges. In milling and turning, the feed should not be too fast, and the depth of cut should be greater than 0.3 mm.
Semifinished material supplied by Timco may either be cut by machine on band saws or circular saws used for wood, or by hand with sharp wood or metal saws with wide-set teeth. Band saws are specially suitable for large cross-sections since they conduct the heat away and allow high cutting speeds. The band saw blades may be 10-30 mm wide and about 1-2 mm thick with the circular pitch between 3 and 10 mm. To prevent the saw blades from becoming jammed, the teeth must be set at approximately 0.5 mm. When using circular saws, saw blades with a minimum setting of 0.5 mm are also preferred, but hollow ground saw blades may also be used. The higher the cutting speed the cleaner the cut surface. Normal cutting for band saws are 1000-2000 m/min. and for circular saws 3000-4000 m/min.
Semifinished products supplied by Timco may be machined without difficulty on the lathe, and high quality finish will be attained. Mass-produced articles can be manufactured economically, especially when high speed machines customary in light metal working are used. Cooling is not usually necessary but care must be taken to remove all chips. Only for very deep cut, cooling with compressed air or soluble cutting oil is likely to be required. Cutting speeds up to 600 m/min may be used.
Semifinished material supplied by Timco may be planed on customary planing machines and smooth-planing machines as used in woodworking, operating at high cutting speeds. With sharp carbide-tipped blades, feed rates up to 2 mm/revolution and blade may be used.
High speed top milling machines as well as normal milling machines, are suitable for machining . In particular, special milling machines with horizontal, vertical, angle, and fly-cutting attachments make economic large-scale production of shaped articles possible. To ensure the most efficient removal of swarf, milling cutters with coarse pitch are recommended.
Semifinished products supplied by Timco can be drilled on drilling machines, lathes and milling machines. Twist drills are generally used but for larger diameters pointed drills and circular cutters may also be used. With good swarf removal local overheating can largely be avoided. If excessive heating should occur in high speed drilling, cooling may be carried out with compressed air, water, or cutting soluble oil.
Threads can be cut in semifinished products supplied by Timco with normal metal cutting tools, either on the lathe (recommended speed 20-30 rpm) or by hand. In principle, knuckle threads in accordance with DIN 405 are preferred, but vee threads still possess adequate strength properties because of the high notched impact strength of the material.
